Cowper (pop. 431) and Brushgrove (pop. 151) are twin small towns facing each other across the Wingfield Bridge over the Clarence River, not far north along the Pacific Highway from Grafton. If fishing is your bag then this is the place for you. The 1868 Brushgrove Hotel also beckons alluringly! As one of the patrons here commented with a sigh "So many pubs, so little time"
The towns were bypassed by the highway in 1993 after a series of accidents and the tragic Cowper Bus Crash in 1989. The old road no longer joins the modern highway at the east end and a small park there contains a commemorative plaque about the bus crash.

This is the memorial to the victims of the 1989 bus crash. It's at the north end of Clarence St in Cowper where it used to continue on and join the modern highway. |
